Begin with 3 traditional, single color, granny squares. You will be joining them together at the center corners. See photos for how to lay them out in Step 1.
Step 1: Lay squares right side up. Working in top loop only, join yarn and slip stitch each corner stitch together, joining motifs around what will become the center of your heart. Work from left side up to the top center. Chain 1, work back down over the slip stitches you just made, and join the right side stitches and motifs in the same way. Finish off.
Step 2: Join Color B to 1st chain 1 space at top of center – joining both motifs together; chain 1
Step 3: Starting with the left motif, single crochet in each stitch around, to the 3rd corner, making 1 sc in each stitch, chain 1 space and corner, as you work.
Step 4: Chain 3; make 1 single crochet in 1st outside corner of bottom motif; make 1 sc in each stitch and chain 1 space to bottom (corner) of heart.
Step 5: Make 3 single crochet in bottom (corner) of heart. Single crochet up next side of bottom motif, making 1 sc in each stitch and chain 1 space.
Step 6: Make 1 sc in corner, chain 3, make 1 sc in corner of motif above; continue single crocheting around, making 1 sc in each stitch, chain 1 space and corner; join with slip stitch to beginning of round.
Step 7: Chain 1, single crochet in each stitch around, making 3 sc in center sc at bottom of heart and 3 sc in each chain 3 loop on the sides. Join with slip stitch to 1st sc at beginning of round. Finish off. Join Color A in same place.
Step 8: Chain 3 (counts as 1st dc); double crochet in each stitch around to center single crochet at bottom of heart. Make 3 dc in bottom center stitch, then proceed to make 1 dc in each stitch around, all the way to the starting point. Join with slip stitch to top chain of 1st dc. Finish off.
Step 9: Weave in loose ends. Attach a small star, flower or other motif to center of heart. Use a clothing steamer to relax stitches and lay heart flat.
