Traditional Granny Square (multi-color)

Use as many colors as you like, one for each new time around the square.

Step 1:  Chain 4; make ring by slip stitching into first chain

Step 2:  Chain 5 (counts as 1 double crochet + 2 chain)

Step 3:  Make 3 double crochet in center of ring

Step 4:  Chain 2; make [3 dc, chain 2, 3 dc] in center of ring

Step 5:  Chain 2, make 2 double crochet in center of ring; join with slip stitch to 3rd chain of first chain 5 in round

Step 6:  Break off color; join new color to any chain 2 corner space

Step 7:  Chain 3 (counts as 1st dc); make [2 dc, chain 2, 3 dc] in same space

Step 8:  Chain 1, make [3 dc, chain 2, 3 dc] in next chain 2 space

[Repeat Step 8 twice more]

Step 9:  Chain 1, join with slip stitch to top chain of 1st chain 3 in round

Step 10:  Break off color; join new color to any chain 2 corner space

Step 11:  Chain 3 (counts as 1st dc); make [2 dc, chain 2, 3 dc] in same space

Step 12:  Chain 1, make 3 double crochet in next chain 1 space

Step 13:  Chain 1, make [3 dc, chain 2, 3 dc] in corner

[Repeat Steps 12 & 13 twice more]

Step 14:  Chain 1, make 3 dc in last chain 1 space

Step 15:  Chain 1, join with slip stitch to top chain of 1st chain 3 in round

Continue making multi-color granny square larger by changing colors with each new round.

Join new color in any chain 2 corner space. Chain 3; make [2 dc, chain 2, 3 dc] in same space.

Make 3 double crochet in each chain 1 space. Chain 1 before and after each set of 3 double crochet stitches, except when working in chain 2 space in corners.

Make [3 dc, chain 2, 3 dc] in each corner.
