Basic Shell Stitch

by M. J. Joachim

Foundation:  Make a multiple of 6 chain stitches (+2 more chain stitches)

Step 1:  Single crochet in 2nd chain from hook

Step 2:  Make 5 double crochet in 3rd chain from hook

Step 3:  Make 1 single crochet 3rd chain from hook

[Repeat Steps 2 & 3 across row, ending with one sc in last chain]

Step 4:  Chain 3, turn; make 2 double crochet in 1st stitch of new row

Step 5:  Single crochet in 3rd dc from hook; make 5 dc in next single crochet

[Repeat Step 5 across row, ending with 2 dc in last sc]

Note:  3 double crochet on 1 edge and 2 double crochet on the other, equal 5 dc (1 shell stitch). You may vary this by making 3 dc on each edge, if you wish. However, when making shell panels to create larger projects, it is good to consider matching shells, with a consistent number of 5 double crochet stitches.

Step 6:  Chain 1, turn; single crochet in 1st stitch to begin new row

Step 7:  Make shell (5 dc) in next single crochet; sc in 3rd double crochet from hook

[Repeat Step 7 across row, ending with 1 sc in top chain of turning chain from previous row.]

Repeat Steps 4 – 7 for pattern.
